Michael Leimbach is a licensed marriage and family therapist working in the Santa Cruz area. He has a variety of clients. He thrives helping them work through life and mental health challenges.
How did you initially get started in marriage and family counseling? What drew you to this industry?
Two things happened. One, I was finishing my undergrad in Art History at Santa Clara University. And second, I came across a friend who worked in this field. They looked at me and said, “I think you should go into this.”
After I thought about that — with my disability and who I was as a person — it just ultimately felt right. I wasn’t going to be a lifeguard.
Who or what is your biggest influence?
That’s a tough one. Anybody I’ve come across that demonstrates compassion, courtesy, and tolerance. Those people inspire me to be better as an individual and to provide the best mental health support I can for others.
What brought you to Satellite Workplaces?
I needed an office space that was both private for the work I do and wheelchair-accessible. The great thing about Satellite is that I can reserve on an as-needed basis. I really appreciate how awesome and helpful the staff has been.
What’s your favorite thing about Satellite Workplaces?
Can I list more than one? The people, the flexibility of renting space by the hour, and the space itself is nicely put together for what you’re offering. It’s got good feng-shui.
What would you suggest to improve our coworking community?
Let me think for a second. I know it sounds like I’m a cheerleader for you guys, but I can’t really think of anything. Having someone there at the office, putting name tags on the door, having drinks and snacks, I can’t think of anything more I could ask from you.
How do you balance work and personal time?
Sometimes not very well hahah, but in this field we are taught to really pay attention and be mindful of your own needs for yourself, so you can show up fully for others. This is highlighted in graduate programs and internships. The institutions and schools prioritize it.
Can you tell me about any pets you have?
Yes! I have one little 17 year old one-eyed deaf shih tzu dog, with a bad heart, that has seen me and my family through a pandemic. He has been such a fun and amazing little creature of energy for us. He came along at the right time. He came to us as Chewy, because he looks like Chewbacca from Star Wars, but he’s now Smishy.
Do you anticipate staying in this area for a long time?
Yes. Most likely. Unless the perfect opportunity presents itself in Maui, I’ll be staying here.
